Records

Formats for records and case presentations are not specified in detail by the Board. Each applicant shall present the records in a manner which is neat and consistent and allows analysis of the treatment outcomes. Cephalometric analysis should conform to the applicant's usual practices.

An overall standard reflecting the AOB theme (Excellence, Education and Review) is expected.

Every record item must be clearly marked with your AOB Number and the patient's initials
(use the format nn-AAA).

It is suggested that you assemble your presentation in a folder with clear plastic inserts which will contain photos, copies of radiographs, tracings and patient assessment and treatment planning.

The recommended records are specified below.  However, applicants may vary these specifications depending on conditions.

  • Study models showing the reflections of the mucosa and trimmed with the bases parallel to the occlusal plane and capable of standing on their distal surfaces. The Board has no regulations concerning the style of trimming except that they be neat, clear and compact. Study models should also clearly show the date they were obtained. It is preferable to state whether the occlusion is centric relation or centric occlusion.
  • Radiographs should show sex, date of birth and date of service. The patient's and the orthodontist's name should be masked so that neither can be identified
  • Cephalogram at maximum interdigitation. A cephalogram in centric jaw relation may be required in cases with mandibular displacement on closure to centric occlusion.
  • Cephalometric analysis - The applicant should trace each cephalogram and provide a cephalometric analysis for post-treatment comparison. The patients initials, sex, date of birth and date of each radiograph should be clearly marked on the tracings.
  • OPG and other radiographs considered necessary.
  • Photographs must be good quality prints of standard size
    Minimum requirements:
Extra-oral - profile, full face, smile
Intra-oral - occlusion right, occlusion left, occlusion front.
  • Clinical details and case analysis required to formulate a diagnose and treatment plan including the proposed schedule of stages and appliances. This information shall be entered on Form 2 - Case Details.

Sample case (AOB First Stage)
Sample case (AOB Certification)

This is a case submitted for AOB certification and is an example of the standard of records recommended by the current AOB committee. This is an example only, and should not be considered the minimum or highest standard of clinical records recommended. The case report may include greater or less detail as determined by the presenting orthodontist.
